Romantics
From Turner’s very personal interpretation of landscapes and seascapes to William Blake’s visionary experiences, the exhibition celebrates the works of 19th-century artists who believed in ‘‘creative freedom,’’ including Constable, Fuseli and Palmer. More than 170 paintings and works on paper are in the long-term display. Two rooms are devoted to the influence of these painters on the neo-Romantics of the mid-20th century, such as Graham Sutherland (1903-80), and to landscape photography since 1960. Left, John Constable (1776-1837): "Flatford Mill (Scene on a Navigable River), 1816-17." (Tate, London)
